MHS - Women's Soccer / May 21, 2021 By Kasey McDowell
The Mulvane women's soccer team hosted the Collegiate Spartans for the 4-1A regional game on Thursday, May 20th. The Wildcats, who have had several very successful seasons over the past 5 years, have struggled to make it past the regional game. 
This would be the Wildcats' year as they took the Spartans to double overtime and sophomore Karlie Kanaga was able to slip one past the goalie for the win.
The Spartans were able to score quickly on the Cats with a nice center kick from the right side of the field and one of their forwards kicked the cross into the corner of the goal. The first half ended 0-1 in favor of the Spartans.
The Lady Cats would come back in the second half and junior Emma Kolbe kicked a beautiful left-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal from around 30 yards out to tie up the game 1-1. Karlie Kanaga was able to score another goal on a breakaway from her defender to bring the score 2-1, but the Spartans would answer with less than 10 minutes on the clock to bring the game to a 2-2 overtime.
The first overtime was a defensive battle and neither team was able to get the ball into the net. Rylie Schiffelbein made some great diving saves in the overtime periods. 
In the second overtime, Emma Kolbe and Karlie Kanaga got on a breakaway and Emma passed it to Karlie on the right side and she kicked it past the goalie for the game-winner.
Rylie Schiffelbein guarded the Wildcats net and finished the game with 9 saves with 11 shots on goal.

The Cats will face Buhler in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 25th at 6:00 PM at Lyle Couch Stadium in Mulvane.
