The Mulvane girls soccer team takes Circle to overtime, fall just short and finish as regional runner-up.

The Mulvane girl's soccer team closed out their 2022-23 season at regionals this week. The Wildcats won the semi-final game against Wichita Classical on Tuesday 1-0 with a goal from sophomore Kierra Cain and an assist from Jade Smallwood. The Mulvane defense clamped down and only allowed 3 shots on goal and Rylie Schiffelbein had 3 saves.

The Wildcats traveled to Circle on Friday for their third matchup against the Thunderbirds this season. The teams were scoreless after the first half and the Birds struck first with a nice shot that found the top corner of the net. The Wildcats tied up the game as senior Emma Hoffman broke loose and found the net. The game went into overtime and the Thunderbirds found the net again from a corner kick for the win. Goalie Rylie Schiffelbein finished with 14 saves in the game.

The Wildcats finished the season with an 8-10 record and 5-4 in league play, and senior Emma Hoffman led the Cats in goals with 12 and assists with 5 for 29 points. Sophomore Jade Smallwood finished with 11 goals and 5 assists for 27 points. Junior Teagan Garrison finished with 7 goals and 5 assists for 19 points after being brought up to forward from defense halfway through the season.

Sophomore Kierra Cain finished with 4 goals, sophomore Cydnee Adams finished with 2 goals, freshman Grace Carpenter finished with 1 goal, and Rylie Schiffelbein finished with 1 goal. Schiffelbein finished the season in the goal with 161 saves and 29 goals against for an 85% save percentage. Junior Ashlyn Alumbaugh finished the season with 2 assists and sophomore Mackenzie Christian and freshmen Mackenzie Rogers and Natalia Jester all had 1 assist on the season.
 

The Cats will graduate 4 seniors: Karlie Kanaga, Rylie Schiffelbein, Emma Hoffman, and Rebecca Frieden. Kanaga missed her senior season due to a knee injury and her freshman year due to the season being canceled, but still had a huge impact in those 2 years with 68 goals, 32 assists, some school records, two 1st team All-League awards, one league MVP award, two All-Metro awards, and three 1st team All-State awards. Hoffman had a great career at Mulvane and finished with 42 goals, 23 assists, two Honorable Mention All-League Awards, and one 2nd Team All-State Award.

Schiffelbein had a phenomenal career at Mulvane in the goal and finished with 483 saves out of 574 shots on goal for an 84% save percentage, one Honorable Mention All-League selection, one 2nd Team All-League selection, two All-Metro awards, and three All-State 2nd team selections. This year was Frieden's first year to play soccer and she played on the JV squad this season.
