The Mulvane wrestling team traveled to Augusta last Saturday for the 4A regional tournament to see who earns a spot at the state tournament on February 24th and 25th in Salina. The Wildcats had 12 wrestlers compete at regionals and the boys as a team finished in 7th place with 75 points out of 15 teams and had 3 wrestlers qualify for the state tournament.

In the 106 lb weight class, sophomore Koehn Dietrich came in with a 29-5 record and received a bye in the first round. Koehn won his first match in 14 seconds with a pin and he lost his second match by fall. On the consolation side, Koehn's next match was the "heartbreak" round, which is if you win you're in, if you lose you are done, and he took care of business and won by an 8-4 decision, guaranteeing a trip to state. His last match was for 3rd or 4th place and Dietrich pinned his opponent in 23 seconds for a 3rd place finish.

In the 144 lb weight class, senior Maurice Fuller came in with a 22-10 record and received a bye in the first round. Maurice was pinned in his first match, making his road to state much tougher through the consolation side of the bracket. Fuller powered through however and was able to pin his next two opponents in 24 seconds and 1 min 31 seconds. His heartbreak round match went to the third round and Maurice finally pinned his opponent at the 4:15 mark to stamp a trip to state. Maurice lost his next match to finish in 4th place in his bracket.

In the 190 lb weight class, senior Chris Dietrich came in with a 29-3 record and received a bye in the first round. Chris won his first match by fall in 1 minute 3 seconds and won his next match in the semifinals by fall in the 3rd period which qualified him for state and sent him to the championship match. Dietrich took the championship match to the final buzzer but lost by a 5-9 decision and finished in 2nd place in his bracket.

The Wildcats had a few wrestlers come very close to qualifying for state. Sophomore Cameron Hagerman reached the heartbreak round in the 138 lb weight class but lost a very close match in a 1-2 decision. Ethan Irvine reached the heartbreak round in the 215 lb weight class but fell in a 1-7 decision and Austin Vanderhoof lost in the heartbreak round by fall.
