The Mulvane girl's wrestling team traveled to Wellington last Saturday for the 1-4A regional tournament to see who earns a spot at the state tournament on February 22nd and 23rd in Salina. The Wildcats had 9 wrestlers compete at regionals and the girls as a team finished in 3rd place with 103 points out of 31 teams and had 4 wrestlers qualify for the state tournament.
In the 115 lb weight class was sophomore Leiannah Landreth who was 30-0 coming into regionals and the number 1 seed in her bracket. Landreth pinned her first opponent in 19 seconds and her second opponent in 14 seconds. Her third match lasted 1 minute 30 seconds before she won by fall, and in her championship match, she pinned her opponent in 44 seconds. Landreth is sitting at 34-0 on the season and earned her second regional championship and a trip to state.
In the 145 lb weight class was senior Kammie Schanz who was 33-0 coming into regionals and the number 1 seed in her bracket. Schanz pinned her first opponent in 15 seconds and her second opponent in 8 seconds. Her third match lasted into the 3rd period before she won by fall, and in her championship match, she pinned her opponent in 1 minute 22 seconds. Schanz is sitting at 37-0 on the season and earned her third regional championship and her fourth trip to state. Shanz finished in 2nd place in state her freshman year, state champ her sophomore year, and 5th place in state her junior year.
In the 170 lb weight class was junior Loren Gonzalez who was 8-7 coming into regionals and the number 2 seed in her bracket. Gonzalez had a first-round bye and then pinned her first opponent in 1 minute 59 seconds and her second opponent in the third period. In the championship match, Loren lost by fall and finished in 2nd place, earning her another trip to the state tournament.
In the 125 lb weight class, freshman Dacia Root, who had earned a trip to regionals over a couple of upperclassmen and sitting at 8-2 on the season, had a bye in the first round and then lost by fall in her first match. Root had a long road through the consolation bracket ahead of her but she won her next match by fall in the third period and then followed that up with another win by fall in 1 minute 46 seconds. Her next match was in the "heartbreak round", where if you win you go to state, if you lose your season is done. Dacia found a tough match and ended up winning by decision with a 6-3 score, earning herself a trip to state. In the 3rd/4th place match, Dacia lost by Major Decision, so she finished in 4th place.
Senior Jericka Stiles won her first match in the 130 lb bracket by fall and lost her second match by fall. After a bye, Stiles was in her third match and lost by fall to end her tournament. Junior Kasey Dillon had the same route as Jericka as she won her first match in the 135 lb bracket by fall, lost her second match by fall, and lost her third match by fall. Junior Katelyn Wyant also had the same route in the 155 lb bracket as she won her first match by fall and lost her second and third matches by fall. Freshman Makenzie Rogers and junior Ivy Jackson in their first year of wrestling both fought hard but lost their first two matches.
