Kanaga notches record books, Schmidt & Alumbaugh All-Tourney Team, & girls grab 1st place at Belle Plaine.

The Mulvane High School girls volleyball had a busy week last week, traveling to Collegiate for a triangular on Tuesday and varsity & JV tournaments on Saturday. The varsity girls traveled to Belle Plaine this past Saturday and rolled through the competition, going 5-0 on the day and bringing home first place. The girls faced Chaparral in game one, winning 2-0 (25-18 & 25-16). The next game was against the host school and the Cats defeated the dragons 2-0 (25-20 & 25-20). The girls faced Moundridge in the next game, once again winning 2-0 (25-14 & 25-22). The fourth game was against Central Christian and the girls won 2-0 (25-22 & 25-13). The final game was against Attica and the Cats won 2-1 (21-25, 25-20, & 25-21).

Senior Emily Schmidt and junior Ashlyn Alumbaugh both received All-Tournament team honors. Schmidt led the Cats with 50 kills in the 5 games and finished with 35 digs. Alumbaugh led the team in assists with 53 and also had 6 aces and 19 digs. Senior Karlie Kanaga led the team in digs with 62 and finished with 12 assists. Junior Teagan Garrison finished with 25 kills, 7 aces, and 17 digs. Sophomore Makenna Treat finished with 20 kills and 4 blocks. Sophomores Lexi Cunningham finished with 16 digs and 17 kills and Madi Cunningham finished with 15 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Charli Richardson finsihed with 45 assists and 32 digs.

The varsity and JV girls traveled to Collegiate last Tuesday for a non-league triangular with the Spartans and the El Dorado Wildcats. The varsity girls faced El Dorado first and won 2-0 (25-23 & 25-20) and faced the Spartans in the nightcap. The Cats won in a very exciting and intense match 2-1 (16-25, 26-24, & 25-23). Senior Emily Schmidt led the Cats with 23 kills and 16 digs. Senior Karlie Kanaga finished the evening with 39 digs and 3 aces. Junior Teagan Garrison finished with 11 kills and 12 digs. Junior Ashlyn Alumbaugh finished the night with 29 assists and 8 digs. Freshman Charli Richardson finished with 23 assists and 11 digs, and sophomore Madi Cunningham finished with 9 kills and 9 digs.

Senior Karlie Kanaga was sitting at 273 digs before the triangular and was 3 shy of the Mulvane School record for digs in a season of 276 held by Callie Humbolt (2019). After the triangular and the tournament on Saturday, Karlie has 374 digs on the season and notched her name in the record books.

The JV girls had a great evening at Collegiate as well and defeated El Dorado 2-0 (25-11 & 25-6) and Collegiate 2-0 (25-17 & 25-18).

The JV girls traveled to Rose Hill on Saturday for a tournament and the girls went 2-3 on the day. The girls first game was against Wichita Trinity and the Cats won 2-0 (25-23 & 25-20). The girls fell in the next three matches against Andale 0-2 (15-25 & 15-25), Garden Plain 0-2 (17-25 & 19-25), and Rose Hill 0-2 (22-25 & 20-25). The Cats won the last match of the day against Andover 2-0 (25-23 & 25-18)

The C-Team girls also had some games last week as they traveled to Andale on Thursday, September 27th and swept the teams, going 3-0 on the evening. The girls defeated Andale 2-1 (15-25, 25-17, & 15-10), McPherson 2-0 (25-10, 25-19), and McPherson 2-0 (25-22, 25-20).

The varsity girls are sitting at 17-14 on the season and 3-3 in league play. The JV girls are sitting at 15-8 on the season and the C-Team is sitting at 19-6 on the year. The varsity and JV girls will be back in action tomorrow at Winfield.
