The Mulvane men's wrestling team traveled to Andale on Saturday, February 19th for the 4A Regional wrestling tournament to see who gets to go to the 4A State tournament this coming week in Salina. The Wildcats had 11 wrestlers participating in the regionals out of the 14 weight classes and the Wildcats finished in 7th place as a team with 84 points. Augusta took the gold with 239 points in the team standings.

In a very tough regional, the Wildcats found themselves with every wrestler at some point with one loss and having to wrestle their way back through the consolation bracket. Mulvane ended up with 7 wrestlers reaching the "heartbreak" round which is the round that determines who makes it to the state tournament or not.

Senior Hunter Dietrich won his heartbreak match by pinfall and made it to the 3rd/4th place match where he pinned his opponent for 3rd place, and qualified for the state tournament. Senior Trent Moses won his heartbreak match by pinfall and also won his next match for 3rd place and also qualified for the state tournament.

Junior Andy Huynh won his heartbreak match by a 1-0 decision in a very exciting match that went all 3 rounds and fell in his final match but finished in 4th place, qualifying for the state tournament. Junior Ethan Irvine won his heartbreak match by pinfall and finished in 3rd place after winning his final match by major decision, earning a trip to state. 

Junior Christopher Dietrich, who only has been wrestling again for a few weeks after recovering from a tragic accident last August, fought his way to the heartbreak round and won his match by pinfall in the second round. Chris fell in his final match by decision but finished in 4th place and earned a trip to the state tournament.

The Wildcats will be sending 9 total wrestlers to state this year, 5 men and 4 women. The women's state tournament will be on Wednesday and Thursday this week and the men's will be on Friday and Saturday.
