Mulvane girls wrestling team finish in 4th place in team standings, qualify 4 for state. Landreth regional champion!

MHS - Wrestling / February 12, 2022 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane girls wrestling team made the trip to Remington High School for the 4-1A regional wrestling tournament on Saturday and the Wildcats brought home 4th place as a team with only 5 wrestlers and are sending 4 girls to the 4-1A State Tournament on February 23rd and 24th, 2022 at Salina.

Mulvane freshman Leiannah Landreth dominated her way through her bracket, winning all 3 of her matches by fall and winning the regional championship in the 109 lb weight class. Landreth is sitting at 31-2 on the season!

Junior Kammie Schanz, who has been battling injuries all season and began her comeback just a few weeks ago, won her first 2 matches by fall and battled hard in her last match, finished in 2nd place and earned her third trip to state.

Junior Jericka Stiles won her first match by fall and lost her second match by fall. She had to climb her way back through the consolation bracket and won her third match by fall and finished in 3rd place by pinning her final opponent, earning her way to the state tournament.

Sophomore Loren Gonzalez lost her first match but was able to fight her way through the consolation bracket and won her next two matches by fall, earning a spot in the 3rd/4th place match and getting an automatic bid to state. Loren finished in 4th place in regionals.

Junior Larissa Gonzalez lost her first match in the tournament and had a couple of great matches after that, pinning both of her next two opponents, but just missed out on state after a loss in her last match. "Like we said after everyone was done, we’re happy for the 4 but so proud of the 5.  Larissa Gonzalez wrestled her best yet in a tough 126 bracket," said Coach Myers.

"The kids wrestled very well!  We continued to wrestle well on top and the improvements we’ve been looking for in the neutral position are coming along.  We will take the next week and a half to freshen up our legs and head to Salina on a mission," concluded Coach Myers.
