Trey Abasolo passes Drew Ellis to become Mulvane's All Time Career Points Leader

MHS - Men's Basketball / February 20, 2021 By Kasey McDowell

The year was 1952 and Jerry Webster was just a freshman at Mulvane High School. Little did he know at the time that he would become a legend at Mulvane High School and become the all-time scoring leader with 1218 points and hold that record for 63 years. Fast forward to 1983 and sophomore Lonny Travis dropped in 201 points his first year on varsity and followed that up with 425 and 549 points his junior and senior years to finish his 3-year career with 1175 points, the closest to Jerry's record in 30 years. Lonny still holds the single-season record of 549 points in the 1984-85 season.

Fast forward another 30 years to 2015 and Drew Ellis is a freshman starting on varsity and drops in 286 points on the season. Drew went on to score 311 points his sophomore year, 431 points his junior year, and 354 points his senior year when he broke the 63-year old record of Webster's and finished his career with 1382 points.

In normal times, one would expect that Drew's record would last another 60 years, but his teammate for two years, Trey Abasolo, was putting up impressive numbers as well. Trey scored 228 points his freshman year and 312 points his sophomore year. Trey had a monster junior year with 504 points, the only other Mulvane player in 115 years to score over 500 points in one season along with Lonny Travis. Starting his senior year with 1044 points, everyone knew Trey was on the path to catch Drew's record and it was just a matter of time.

Friday, February 19th, 2021, the Wildcats traveled to Wellington to face the Crusaders in a league matchup and after averaging 20 points a game in the previous 16 games, Trey had scored 331 points and was sitting at 1375 when the game started. The Cats jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter but Trey did not score any points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Trey dropped in two 3-pointers in a row to bring his total to 1381, and then late in the quarter, he made it to the free-throw line. With his 80.5% free throw percentage this season, the crowd knew that these two free-throws were going in. Trey swished the first one to tie the record and then he swished the second one to break the record at 1383 points. The Wildcats called time out for a small celebration. Trey finished the game with 11 points and is sitting at 1386 career points.

“I’m just so proud of the person Trey has become and the leader that he is,” said his father and Coach Mike Abasolo. “Trey has worked extremely hard when nobody is around and nobody is watching, not for records, but because he began to understand what it takes to be successful. The records are just a byproduct of his unconditional dedication.” A sentiment that this writer can attest to as I have seen Trey in the gym many times in the off-seasons, shooting baskets by himself.

"First just got to say congrats to Trey...the dude has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is at now. I’m blessed that we got to play together for a couple of years and it’s great to see where he has led the team this season. As Coach Fennewald said, he is a first-class kid and is a very special player," said Drew Ellis.

"Congratulations on becoming the All-time points scorer in Mulvane boys basketball history. You have earned it and the Ellis family is extremely proud of you. Keep making this season special!" said Drew's parents, Jeff & Shannon Ellis.

Speaking of records, Trey is also 14 rebounds away from tying Lonny Travis's career rebounds record of 459. Trey is the current record holder of free throws made in a career with 343 and counting. Trey passed Drew Ellis's 3 pointers made in a career record (170) earlier in the season and he's sitting at 181 presently. He also holds the most charges taken in a career record with 33.

The Varsity team had no trouble against Wellington as they won the game 54-32. The boys took the 14-2 lead in the first quarter. The boys outscored Wellington in the second quarter and were ahead at halftime 29-7. The boys lost the third quarter but were ahead 36-16 going into the fourth. The boys outscored Wellington in the fourth quarter and finished with a 54-34 win. Trey Abasolo led the Cats with 11 points on the evening.
