Mulvane Wrestling Ends With Strong Showing at State

Mulvane Wrestling concluded its 2015-16 season with a strong showing in League, Regionals, and State once again. The Cats finished the year with a 33-19 record (7-5 in duels) and finished second in AVCTL D4 League with a 3-1 record, finishing 2nd only to Wellington.

The Wildcats finished the regional tournament on February 20th with a team finish of 6th place out of 15 schools and 5 Wildcats qualifying for state. Anthony Scantlin, the 2014-15 state champion and AVCTL D4 wrestler of the year, grabbed a second trip to state by finishing 2nd place in the 145 lb weight class. Bryce Parker finished 4th place in the 152 lb weight class, Brent Cusick finished 2nd in the 160 lb weight class, Logan Elliott finished 3rd place in the 170 lb weight class, and Dylan Jorns finished 3rd place in the 220 lb weight class. Brent, Logan, and Dylan also qualified for a trip to state for a second year in a row.

STATE TOURNAMENT
In the 220 lb weight class, Dylan Jorns started off strong with a 6-2 decision victory over Santa Fe Trail's Gabe Forrestt. Jorns followed up with a tough 2-4 decision loss to Colby's Austin Hart. Now on the other side of the bracket, Dylan grabbed a couple victories against DeSoto's Lawson Marshall (pinned in 1 minute 43 seconds) and Columbus's Austin Napier (pinned in 47 seconds). His next match was against Abilene's Sam Burt where he fell to a 3-5 decision. Dylan solidified his 5th place state finish by defeating Jake Miller from Paola with a 5-2 decision.

In the 170 lb weight class, Logan Elliott started off strong with a couple of victories with his first match ending with a 3-2 decision victory against Ryan Tiers from Clay Center. His second match ended with a 11-0 decision win against Dylan Misener from Parsons. Logan's third match ended in a 3-12 loss to Pratt's Logan Baird. Now on the other side of the bracket, Elliott won a tough match against Beck Elliott from Linsborg-Smoky Valley with a 1-0 decision. His next match was against Holcomb's Chance Rodriguez where he grabbed a 3rd place state finish with a 3-1 decision.

In the 160 lb weight class, Brent Cusick had a tough start with a 6-18 decision loss to Joey Ewalt from LaCygne-Prairie View. Brent grabbed a couple vitories in his next matches against Abilien's Kevin Wilson (12-9 decision) and Basehor-Linwood's TJ Williams (10-7 decision). Cusick's state run was cut short when he fell to Buhler's Clayton Peterson with a 2-4 decision.

In the 152 lb weight class, Bryce Parker had a couple of tough matches where he fell to Clay Center's Hunter Mullin with a 1:00 minute fail, and to Tre Kline from LaCygne-Prairie View with a 0-1 decision.

In the 145 lb weight class, Anthony Scantlin began his 2nd state championship run against Cody Hazlett from Osawatomie with a 2:44 minute pin. His second match was against Basohor-Linwood's Jonny Trowbridge and ended in a 6-3 decision victory. Scantlin continued his run with a 6-1 decision victory against Pratt's Nick Lucas. The next match was for the championship against Holton's Justin Rieschick.The match was very evenly matched throughout the first two periods, but Anthony grabbed a 1 point lead at the very end of the second period with 1 point for an escape, and took a 1-0 lead into the third period. In the 3rd period, Rieschick took a 1 point lead by scoring 2 points for a takedown, and Scantlin tied it up immediately with a 1 point escape, the score was tied now at 2-2. The score would remain at 2-2 until the very last moment of the period when Anthony grabbed the victory with a 2 point takedown with 4 seconds left.
