Sophomore wrestler Leiannah Landreth wins USA Girls Folkstyle Nationals and KS Folkstyle State Championship in one week.

There was not much time off for Mulvane sophomore wrestler Leiannah Landreth as she finished up her state wrestling tournament on Thursday, February 23rd and she was back on the mats a week later for the 2023 U.S.A. Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Nationals last weekend. Leiannah was on team Kansas and wrestled in the JR Girls 117 lb weight class.

Her weight class had girls from 14 different states (Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah) and Lei faced Ayana Moncada from Colorado in her first match and she pinned her opponent in 28 seconds. Her second opponent was Somally Sek from team Iowa and Landreth pinned her at the 1:01 mark in the second period.

Landreth faced Jasmine Brown from Illinois in her third match and she pinned her at the 0:51 mark of the second period to advance to the quarterfinals where she faced Zorina Johnson from Oregon. Landreth made quick work of that match and pinned her in 47 seconds to advance to the finals.

The championship match featured Landreth versus Mia Hargrove from Colorado and the match went into the second period where Leiannah was able to pin Mia at the 0:44 mark and claim the national championship. Team Kansas ended in 5th place overall.

Less than a week later, Leiannah was back on the mats for the USAWKS 2023 State Folkstyle Championship in Topeka. Landreth wrestled in the HS Girls' 120 lb weight class and won her first match with a pinfall in 18 seconds. Her second match went a little longer but she got the win by fall at the 0:30 mark of the third period. In the next round, Lei won her match at the 1:23 mark of the first period by fall to advance to the semi-finals.

Landreth continued her dominance in the semi-finals with a win by fall at the 1:03 mark of the first period to advance to the championship match. For the championship match, she faced Julissa Rodriguez (Juic3 Acad3my) and Lei scored 6 points in the first period with a takedown, a 2-point nearfall, and another takedown. Rodriguez scored 2 points with an escape. Landreth scored another 2 points in the second period with a 2-point nearfall and Rodriguez scored another point with an escape. Going into the third period, Landreth was up 8-3 and she topped off her lead with 2 points and held on for the 10-3 win by decision to take the gold.
