The Mulvane varsity football team faced Augusta for first time since 2016, fall in close game.

The Mulvane varsity football team traveled to Augusta for week 3 for an AVCTL D3 matchup against the Orioles. The Wildcats were the first on the scoreboard after a 2-yard TD run by quarterback Aiden Heckathorn (So.) with 17 second left in the first quarter. The Orioles owned the second quarter and scored twice to go into halftime with a 15-7 lead. The Wildcats tied the game in the third quarter with another TD run by Heckathorn and a 2-point conversion from Heckathorn to Tyke Creekmore (Sr.).

In a wild back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Orioles took the lead with 10:36 left, and the Cats answered at the 9.11 mark with a nice 53-yard TD run by Fisher Dye (So.). Augusta took the lead again at the 3:38 mark with a touchdown, but the Cats were able to answer quickly with a 2-yard run by Dye. The Cats found themselves down 2 points and were able to get in decent field position with a defensive penalty by Augusta and one untimed down, but the field goal fell short and the Cats fell in a close game 28-30.

The Wildcats offense finished the game with 398 total yards on 63 plays with 239 yards rushing and 159 yards passing. Heckathorn  finished with 159 yards on 12 completions, and also had 50 yards rushing on 13 attempts and 2 rushing TDs. Sophomore running back Fisher Dye had himself a game and led the team in rushing yards with 142 on 17 attempts and 2 TDs. Dye also led the Cats in receiving yards with 66 on 3 receptions.

The defense was led by Trenton Davis (Sr.), Garrett Olson (Jr.), and Kaiden Abasolo (Jr.) who all finished with 6.0 tackles (2 solo - 8 assist,  1 solo - 10 assist, and 4 solo - 4 assist), Chase Dieker with 5.5 tackles (4-3), Maurice Fuller (Sr.) with 4.4 tackles (3-3), Julien Myers with 4.5 tackles (3-3). Kaiden Abasolo, Noah West (Jr.), Ethan Irvine (Sr.), Parker Richardson (Sr.), and Jordan Coe (Sr.) all had at least 0.5 or 1.0 sacks on the evening.

Defense Cont: Noah West with 3.5 tackles (2-3), Ethan Irvine with 3.5 tackles (1-5), Jordan Coe with 2.5 tackles (2-1), Parker Richardson with 2.5 tackles (1-3), Shannon Fuller with 1.5 tackles (1-1), Tyke Creekmore with 1.0 tackles (0-2), Eli Hensley with 1.0 tackles (1-0), Austin Vanderhoof with 1.0 tackles (1-0).

The Freshman/Sophomore team had their third game of the year. The JV game was cancelled due to roster shortage from Augusta. The Orioles shocked the Cats quickly with a 68-yard TD pass, but the Cats bounced back and with a vengence with quarterback Manny Myers and receiver Brady Nelson connecting for three touchdowns in a row in the first quarter. The first two were 31-yard TD passes and the third was a 33-yard TD pass.

The Orioles kept the Cats out of the endzone for most of the second half and got within a couple of points after two touchdowns in the third quarter, but the Cats put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard TD run by Myers.

The varsity team will be back home this Friday for a non-league game against the Rose Hill Rockets wtih a 7:00 PM kickoff. The JV & C-Team squads will travel to Rose Hill for 1.5 games on Monday, September 26th with the C-Team playing 2 quarters starting at 6:00 PM and then the JV team playing 4 quarters after that.
