The Mulvane Middle School football teams faced Winfield in the opening week, split with the Vikings.

MHS - Football / September 5, 2021 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle school football teams kicked off their 2021 season by hosting the Winfield Vikings on Thursday, September 2nd. The 8th-grade team jumped out early and held on for a 20-16 win. Quarterback Manny Myers found the endzone twice with a 9-yard run and as a receiver with a 32-yard reception from Reed Hackleman. Speedster Hunter Landis found the endzone as well with a 17-yard run.

"We got off to a good start to score first but Winfield was able to capitalize and score on a turnover to tie it up. The boys came out after halftime and played with a greater level of effort which showed up on the scoreboard. This is a hard-working group of players that has some great potential," said Coach Beikman.

The 7th-grade team played first and had to work through some injuries throughout the game and fell 38-12. Hays Ensley found the endzone for both of Mulvane's touchdowns with a 16-yard TD reception and a 17-yard TD reception, both from quarterback Grady Myers.

"We got off to a great start by possessing the ball almost the entire first quarter resulting in a score.  In the second quarter, we ran into some minor injuries that required us to move some players around. Winfield was an aggressive team and we did not adjust to that aggressiveness right away. As the game progressed, our players did much better but at that point, they had built a sizable lead. We look to improve upon our first-week miscues and play better in week two," said Coach Beikman.
