The Mulvane Girls Basketball face Wellington and Independence in opening games of the 2020 season.

The Mulvane girls basketball teams with new head coach Doug Evers, new assistant coach Kadee Carpenter, and returning assistant coach Robert Glaser kicked off their season last Friday, December 4th against a tough Wellington team and faced the Independence Gorillas on Tuesday, December 8th in the first game of the Circle Thunderbird Classic.

The varsity girls faced Independence in the opening games of the Thunderbird classic, hosting the Gorillas due to Covid (not all games are being played at Circle) and the Cats were even with the Gorillas in the first half, going into halftime tied 22-22. The girls struggled to put points up in the third quarter and couldn't catch up in the 4th, falling 37-48. Senior Kaitlyn Klein and freshman Teagan Garrison led the cats with 9 points each. Klein and freshman Madison Shaw led the Cats in rebounds with 6 each.

The JV girls had a great game againt the Gorillas, surging ahead in the first half 22-12 and continuing that momentum to finish the game winning 38-25. Senior Campbell Williams and sophomore Jadyn Stevenson led the Cats with 13 points each.

The C-Team girls hosted the Andale Indians since Independence could not field a C-team. The Indians jumped on the Cats and took a 24-9 lead at halfime and closed out the Cats wtih a 41-23 win. Freshman Ashley Young, Ashlyn Alumbaugh, Madison Dunbar, and Elizabeth Blankenship all led the Cats with 4 points each.

The varsity girls kicked off their season, hosting the Wellington Crusaders, one of the top teams in 4A state. The girls struggled to put points in against the Crusaders and turnovers hurt the Wildcats all game. The girls put in a strong effort but fell 18-62. Junior Amber Hansen and freshman Madison Shaw led the Cats with 4 points each.

The JV Girls had a tight game against the Crusaders behind the 10 point effort by sophomore Jadyn Stevenson and 9 points by freshman Madison Phipps. The girls went into halftime down 17-23. They were outscored in the 3rd quarter and tried to make a comback in the 4th but fell 41-47.

The C-Team girls only played two quarters due to Wellington short on players. The girls were down by three after the first quarter and were even in the second, but fell 14-17. Madison Dunbar led the Cats with 6 points in the half-game.

The Varsity game vs Parsons that was originally scheduled for this evening was moved to December 19th. The JV and C-team girls are traveling to Garden Plain this evening with the C-Team game starting at 4:15 and JV at 6:00 PM.
