The MMS girls basketball faced Haysville West in the opening games, sweep the Gorillas.

The Mulvane Middle School girl's basketball teams kicked off their 2023 season last week with home games versus Haysville West and then made the long trip to McPherson on Thursday. 

The 7A team took care of business in their opener as they kept Haysville West at bay all game long. The Cats jumped out ahead in the first half with a 30-2 lead at halftime. It was neck and neck in the second half as the Cats and Haysville West both scored 10 points, but the girls got the 40-12 win. Jillian Heersche led the girls with 15 points on the evening and Lydia McGrew broke into double digits with 11 points.

The 7B team went the same way as the Wildcats opened the first half with an 11-2 lead and outscored Haysville West 21-0 in the second half for the 32-2 win. Myka Rees led the Cats with 14 points in the game.

The 8A team had no trouble against Haysville West as they won the game 52-20. The Wildcats jumped out ahead in the first quarter with a 19-2 lead. The Cats won the second quarter and were ahead at halftime 30-6. The third quarter was the closest one as the Gorillas scored 14 to the Wildcats 12, but the Cats took the 4th quarter 10-0 for the 52-20 win. Brittani Peschel and Kaitlyn Paul led the Wildcats with 14 points each in the game and Halle Ensley broke into double digits with 10 points.

The 8B team took care of business as well and held the Gorillas to only 4 points in the game, winning 22-4. The girls took the 15-2 lead in the first half and won the second half 7-2. Addilyn Williams led the girls with 8 points on the evening.

The Thursday games had a different tune for the Cats. The 8A girls had trouble breaking through the McPherson defense all evening as they fell 15-29. McPherson jumped out ahead of the Wildcats in the first half as the Wildcats went into halftime down 10-13. McPherson held the Cats at bay in the second half and the Cats fell 15-29. Brittani Peschel led the girls with 8 points in the game.

The 8B team played only 2 quarters and the Wildcats fell 6-14. The Wildcats took a 6-4 lead in the first quarter, but McPherson held the Cats scoreless in the second quarter 10-0. Addilyn Williams led the Wildcats with 4 points on the evening.

It was a nail-biter of a game as the 7A team faced McPherson but the girls fell 34-36. The girls took the lead during the first half, going into halftime up 16-15. McPherson won the third quarter 10-7, taking a 2-point lead. The 4th quarter was neck-and-neck but the Wildcats fell just short. Jillian Heersche led the girls with 17 points on the evening.

The 7B team had no trouble against McPherson as they won the game 48-4. The Wildcats jumped out ahead in the first half with a 30-2 lead at halftime. The Wildcats closed out the second half of the game by outscoring McPherson 18-2 and got the win 48-4. Layla Myers led the Cats with 14 points in the contest.
