The Middle School Boys face Winfield to open season and came away with 3 wins on the evening.

MHS - Men's Basketball / January 23, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle School boys basketball opened their season on Tuesday, January 21st by hosting the Winfield Vikings. The 8th-grade boys swept the Vikings as the A team won in fine fashion 53-20 and the B team won 29-18. The 7th-grade boys split with the Vikings as the A team lost 28-36 and the B team won 24-18.

"In the A game we preach tempo, we want to own the tempo and that's what the starting 5 did. Shannon did an awesome job of getting into passing lanes and getting the ball on the D end and pushing it to our end. I repeat it all the time: the easiest O to run is the one you don't have to run at all, get the ball and go score and that's what we did. Wayman made shots inside and outside all night. Olson and Abasolo owned the boards." said Coach Hargrove.

Shannon Fuller led the team with 18 points, Kaiden Abasolo with 10 points, Gavin Wayman with 9 points, Aiden McKee with 6 points, Lucas Sorensen and Garrett Olson with 4 points each, and Canon Lampe with 2 points.

"Lucas Sorensen and Gavin Clinesmith pushed the tempo and played great transition O. Coach Kyle Just really challenged those two to push the tempo and they did a great job of it. Colton Flemming led the team on the boards and Kayden Richecky played great D in the paint and did a great job stopping Winfield's big guys." said Coach Hargrove.

Sorensen finished with 10 points, Clinesmith with 6 points, Flemming and Canon Lampe with 4 points each, Tucker Hargrove and Kayden Richecky with 2 points each, and Gavin Young with 1 point.

In the 7A game, "we came out strong in the first quarter, but the momentum shifted in the 2nd quarter. We gave up 15 points in the 2nd quarter and struggled to defend their penetration. We also struggled to rebound and allowed too many second chances around the rim" said Coach Hansen.

"We made a push in the second half and cut their lead down to 4 points. Fisher Dye played a great game ending with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals" said Hansen.

"Our defensive pressure made the Winfield guards uncomfortable in the B game. Braylon Ross did a good job of looking for his shot and ended the game with 8 points. Aiden Heckathorn made a big impact on both sides of the floor finishing with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kaden Palmer’s length and inside presence was a factor for us in both games" said Coach Hansen. Kaden finished with 7 points.

"It was great to get on the floor and identify some of our strengths as well as recognize a few areas we need to improve. We will take what we learned from this game and try to make some adjustments before our next game against Prairie Hills" said Hansen.
