Mulvane Men's Basketball takes down Labette in opening round of Circle T-bird Classic, Abasolo scores 33.

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2019, The Mulvane High School varsity boys basketball team defeated Labette County High School, 66-47, in their opening round game of the Circle T - Bird Classic Basketball Tournament. 

Leading the Cats was Jr. guard, Trey Abasolo who finished with the game high 33 points. More importantly was how efficient Abasolo was able to pick the Grizzlies apart, shooting 6 of 12 from the floor and 6 of 10, 60%, from the three point line, shooting 12 for 22 overall, 54.5% for the game and added in 6 rebounds, 1 block.

Sr, Michael Manis was chairman of the boards, snatching 11 rebounds, 6 defensive and 5 offensive. Sr. Gage Gerlach was on fire from behind the three point line going 3 for 8, 37%, and finishing with 15 points, 7 rebounds.

“It was great to see Gage bust out offensively tonight, and he worked even harder on the defensive end which I thought was more important for us” said Head Coach, Mike Abasolo.

And maybe the most efficient player on the night was Sr. Kiser Jansen, who finished as the third leading scorer with 8, and did it in only 11 minutes, and went 2 for 2 from the three point line, 100%, and went 2 for 2 from the free throw line, 100%, and sprinkled in 3 rebounds.

The JV team fell to Labette County 36-56. The game was within 3 points at halftime but Labette broke the game open in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Cats 18-8 and 4th quarter outscoring the Cats 17-10. Sophomore Mason Ellis lead the Cats with 11 points and junior Aaron Ballinger put in 10 points. Junior Trent Billingslea finished with 6 points and junior Canon Smith and sophomore Ian Comer finished with 4 points each. Sophomore Jacob Duncan added one point.

The Cats face an uphill battle in their next two opponents, Independence on Thursday at 7:30pm, they defeated host Circle in their first matchup and No. 3 in 4A, Parsons High School on Saturday at 4pm, they defeated No. 1 in 3A, Collegiate in their opening game.
