Mulvane Baseball End Season With 2nd Best State Finish In School Baseball History

MHS - Baseball / June 2, 2019 By Kasey McDowell

Facing bad weather, several postponement, and a site change, the Mulvane Baseball team finally hit the field for the 2nd round of 4A State Baseball. Tonganoxie and Nickerson finished their game earlier in the day with Nickerson winning 6-5 which put them as the next opponent for Mulvane. Buhler defeated #1 seed Fort Scott to put the Crusaders in the championship game vs the winner of Mulvane & Nickerson.

The Wildcats jumped off to a quick lead with runs in the first and second inning but Nickerson answered with a run in the second inning, two runs in the third inning, and three runs in the 4th for a 6-2 lead. Mulvane rallied in the fifth and sixth innings by scoring two runs in each inning to tie the score up 6-6 going into the last inning. Nickerson was able to get the bases loaded and the Cats brought in an outfielder into the infield for a 5th defender on the infield. Nickerson was able to get a hard grounder out of the infield to drive in the winning run.

“There’s no good words unless you’re holding the first-place trophy, but the need to take a deep breath, step back and take a look at what they did.” said an emotional Coach Nelson.

“They did everything in their power to turn this thing around, the record didn’t always look good, and games weren’t always pretty, but the way they battled was unparalleled.” said Nelson.

The Wildcats finished in a 3rd place tie with Fort Scott in the 4A State Tournament. Due to the weather delays and postponements, the 3rd and 4th place game was cancelled. The 3rd place finish is the second best finish at State in Mulvane's 38 year baseball history, only behind the 1986 State Championship team.
