The Mulvane Wildcats celebrated Winter Homecoming last week and capped off the celebration with a great night of ballgames, homecoming ceremony, and a recognition of the men's basketball career points record holders.

The Varsity girls faced off against Collegiate for the third time this season and although they fought hard, they fell to the Spartans 28-46. Alicia Almirante led the Wildcats with 9 points and 8 rebounds followed by Carson White (7 pts / 4 reb), Keera Parks (6 pts / 8 reb), Kaitlyn Klein (4 pts / 3 reb), and Haley Chambers (2 pts / 1 reb).

There was more than 3,702 career points represented at half court before the tip of Friday night’s Mulvane High School homecoming boys basketball game.

Sr. Drew Ellis was recognized as becoming the all time leading scorer in Mulvane basketball history with more than 1,295 points, and after his 14 pt, 6 reb., 2 assist, and 2 block performance against Wichita Collegiate, he now has 1,309 career points and counting with four regular season games remaining.

Along with recognizing Ellis was Lonny Travis, now third in career points with 1,175, and Jerry Webster, now second in career points with 1,218. Jerry Webster passed away in 2013 and was represented by his family. His wife Kirsten, Sons Greg and Mark, and sister Judy Wayman were all present in support of Ellis and his achievement.

Webster was also honored with being selected into the Mulvane High School Wall of Fame. Before Ellis, he held the boys basketball scoring record for 63 years, and did it before the three point line was instituted.

Ellis has utilized the three point line effectively. He is the program leader in career three pointers with 160 and counting. Ellis also holds the single game record with 9.

They boys played a great game against the Spartans who collectively out sized the Wildcats by quite a margin. Trey Abasolo led the Wildcats with 18 points followed by Ellis (14 pts), Gerlach (10 pts), Herrman (8 pts), and Manis (2 pts). The Wildcats were within just a few points of the Spartans in the late stages of the game, but due to having to foul to stop the clock, the Spartans ended up winning by 8 points.

During halftime of the boys game, Mulvane celebrated the annual Winter Homecoming ceremony. The first queen candidate was Talure Bird. Talure is daughter of Mike and Denise Bird.  As a student at MHS, Talure has participated in National Honor Society, Rowdie Crowd, KAY, SADD, Cheerleading, Soccer, and wrestling manager.  Talure was being escorted by Kyle Smith.  Kyle is the son of Casey and Shannon Myers.  Kyle’s activities include football and wrestling.

The second queen candidate was Grace Myears. Grace’s parents are Daniel and Chele Myears.  Grace is involved in basketball, soccer, SADD, KAY, circle of friends, Rowdie Crowd council, and National Honor Society.  Escorting Grace was Braden Webb.  Braden’s parents are Stephanie and Jerimiah Webb.  Braden has been active in Football, baseball, track, and national honor society.  

The third queen candidate is was Keera Parks. Keera is the daughter of Bonnie Young, Rob Young, Floyd Parks, and Alyssa Parks. Keera’s activities at Mulvane High School are volleyball, basketball, soccer, jazz band, varsity band, and student council. Keera’s escort was Tyler Fox. Tyler’s parents are Randy and Tracey Fox. Tyler’s activities include cross country, golf, student council, national honor society, circle of friends, debate, and k-cat.

The fourth and final queen candidate was Mady Tharp. Mady’s parents are Chad and Robin Tharp.  As a student at MHS, Mady has participated in basketball, soccer, Rowdie Crowd council, national honor society, and Butler early college academy. Mady was escorted by Gage Milan. Gage is the son of Mark and Nancy Milan. Gage has been involved in football, basketball, golf, and National Honor Society.

The 2019 Winter Homecoming Queen is Grace Myears and the king is Kyle Smith.
