The Mulvane football team grab first win of the season over the Field Kindley Golden Tornadoes

MHS - Football / October 5, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

After the homecoming game against Circle was cancelled due to Circle having Covid-19 issues, Coach Daniel Myears and the Wildcats were hungry to get back on the field. They made the long trip to Coffeyville for a non-conference matchup with the Golden Tornadoes. The Cats were 2-0 against Field Kindley, defeating them 28-20 in 2018 and 47-12 in 2019, so the Cats were confident in the matchup last Friday.

The Wildcats scored first as sophomore quarterback Chase Dieker found junior tight end Ian Comer for a 26 yard TD pass. The Tornadoes answered with a score of their own with a 23 yard pass and the first quarter ended with the Cats down 6-7. Mulvane scored twice in the second quarter with Dieker finding sophomore running back Julien Myers for a 29 yard TD pass and then a 3 yard TD pass to Comer. The Tornadoes scored late in the quarter but the Cats went into halftime up 18-14.

The 3rd quarter was scoreless for the Wildats but the Tornadoes added on a score with a 53 yard pass and the Cats went into the 4th quarter down 18-20. The Cats defense forced a couple of punts and the offense was able to capitalize late in the quarter as they drove the field 92 yards for a score. The drive started with a nice hook-n-ladder play as Dieker passed the football to Comer, who then lateral'd to senior Cannon Smith for a 31 yard gain. Dieker then found Myers for a 46 yard pass to bring them down to the 18 yard line. After a sack and a couple of incompletes, Dieker found Comer on a 21 yard pass and first down at the 2 yard line. Comer had to fight the defender for the ball as it was almost intercepted, but Comer came up with the reception. A few plays later, Dieker ran the ball in for a 4 yard TD run. The defense held the Tornadoes one last possesion to secure the 25-20 win.

Mulvane finished with 286 yards of total offense (53 rush, 233 pass) and the defense held the Tornadoes to 268 yards (87 rush, 181 pass). The defense also forced 3 turnovers with senior Canon Smith scooping up 2 fumble recoveries and freshman Kaiden Abasolo had 1 fumble recovery.

"I was proud of how we handled adversity. We took a lead early, then fell behind but quickly answered with 2 more scores in the 1st half," said Coach Myears.

"The fourth-quarter drive showed how much heart and character this team has. 92 yards away with 3 minutes left and no timeouts and we found a way to get the ball down the field and score with about 1 minute left," said Coach Myears
