MHS - Men's Basketball / February 26, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle School boys basketball team traveled to Clearwater on Monday, February 24th and they split with the Indians as the 8th-grade A team won 50-22, the B team lost 21-32, the 7th-grade A team lost 17-27, and the B team won 28-26. The 8th grade A-team is sitting at 9-2 on the season (8-0 in league play) and the B-team is sitting at 5-6 on the season (4-4 in league play). The 7th grade A-team is sitting at 2-9 on the season (2-6 in league play) and the B-team is sitting at 5-6 on the season (4-4 in league play).

In the 7A game, "we started out great defensively holding Clearwater to 3 points in the 1st quarter and 7 points in the first half." said Coach Hansen. Outside shots started to fall for Clearwater in the 3rd quarter. "Our inability to knock down shots put us behind going into the 4th quarter. The boys played tough but were unable to cut away at their lead," said Coach Hansen.

"The boys failed to take advantage of opportunities at the free-throw line and allowed Clearwater's full-court defensive pressure to speed us up and make bad passes," said Hansen

Joe Bull had a big night in both games. He led the way with 10 points in the B game. He was able to force turnovers to break away for easy lay-ups. "The B game had several lead changes and but our boys pulled through and found a way to win in the end," said Coach Hansen. Bull made 2 crucial free throws to tie the game with 5 seconds left. Gaelin Mason-Schmidt was able to jump the inbound pass for a quick steal and put up a shot to win the game before the buzzer.

"The B team lost to Clearwater by 10 points when we played earlier this month so our guys were excited for the opportunity to play them again. We felt like if we played our game and knocked down a few shots we would be in it," said Coach Hansen

"The coaching staff is very proud of this group of boys for the progress they have made through this quick season. We look forward to ending the regular season on Thursday at Rose Hill. We're hopeful that our boys can take care of business and go into the tournament with some confidence," said Hansen

"B game we came out flat and were playing catch up all game. We got beat on the rebounds and the number of possessions showed," said Coach Hargrove. Colton Fleming had a good game leading the Cats with 7 points. "Colton is new to basketball but he has been a big impact on this team, the kid is a hustle kind of guy which we love. We have been working on Colton's range with his shots and he is starting to show some confidence in his shot range" said Coach Hargrove.
