The Middle School boys basketball faced Rose Hill in a league matchup, almost complete the sweep.

MHS - Men's Basketball / February 11, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

It was a busy few days for the Mulvane Middle School boys basketball as they participated in the mid-season shootout tournament on Saturday, February 8th and hosted the Rose Hill Rockets in a league matchup on Monday, February 10th, 12 games in 3 days between both the 7th and 8th grade A and B teams.

The Rockets visited the Wildcats on Monday night in a Patriot League matchup, "we came out with low energy in the 7A-game" said Coach Hansen. "Our shots weren’t falling in the first half. Our frustration on the offensive end carried over to lazy defense early in the game," said Hansen.

"At halftime, we told the guys to stop settling for outside shots and to pick up the intensity on the defensive end. The boys started knocking down shots and forcing turnovers in the 3rd quarter. We went on a 15-0 run and did not allow any points in the 3rd quarter. As a result of our big lead, we were able to get a lot of guys in the varsity game and won the second half 25-3" said Hansen.

"Aiden Heckathorn has played a huge role for us in the last 3 games. He has gotten more comfortable with his spot on defense and has been doing a great job forcing turnovers and snagging rebounds," said Hansen. Heckathorn finished with 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals. Fisher Dye led the team with 11 points. "Dye does a great job of getting out in transition and using his athleticism to get to the basketball," said Hansen. Dye added 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Dylan Mow had a good game and finished with 10 points. Cooper Slayton finished with 6 points and Kaden Palmer with 2 points.

The 7B game was very low scoring as both teams struggled to make shots. "Creighton Mason-Schmidt turned the momentum in our favor in the 2nd quarter scoring 4 points off the bench," said Hansen.

"We had the size advantage in the B game so our posts generated most of our scoring. Caven Martin is getting better every game. I’m extremely proud of the way he is contesting shots and getting rebounds. Cooper Johns continues to snag offensive rebounds and converts them to second-chance points," said Hansen. Johns finished with 4 points and Braylon Ross, Kaden Palmer, and Gaelin Mason-Schmidt all finished with 2 points each.

On the 8th grade side, "our A-team played well tonight. On the offensive end, we struggled to make easy layups all night but made up for it by playing with patience and working the ball to find open looks," said Coach Hargrove.

"We made some adjustments to our D after the 1st quarter and the boys really turned it up on the defensive end making Rose Hill make mistakes. After the rough weekend, we had at our midseason tourney we wanted to come out and play our basketball tonight and control the tempo," said Coach Hargrove. Abasolo had another good night with 22 points and 15 boards. "Kaiden had his outside shot working and owned the inside game as well. We've had to make some personnel adjustments because of injuries and sickness and we've had some guys like Cannon Lampe step up and start on our A team and he has done a great job," said Hargrove.

"In the B-game, we couldn't get passed their 2-3 press tonight. Their high-pressure D really took it out of us and we kept making mistakes over and over. Josh Lien and Gavin Young did a good job in the paint getting rebounds and Garrett Booe played good D for us tonight," said Hargrove.

The Wildcats participated in the mid-season shootout last Saturday and it was a tough weekend for the Wildcats. One of the challenges is that players either have to play in the A game or the B game, but they cannot play in both, so that limits the coaches in the number of players, especially if any players get into foul trouble. The Wildcats went 0-8 for the weekend between the 7th and 8th-grade teams.

"A team we had a hard time stopping Augusta and Circle inside. Both Circle and Augusta had size and numbers in both A and B games, we were down to 6 players in B and 7 players in A," said Coach Hargrove.

"Our B team just couldn't get anything going. We were in foul trouble all day and with 6 kids that's never good. The A team was pretty much the same story with the fouls. A team we had spurts where we looked really good then we would let the team go on a 14 to 0 run. It was a rough day for us and I'm looking forward to getting back into our own gym on Monday against Rosehill," said Hargrove.
