MHS - Men's Basketball / February 4, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle School boys teams were back at home on Monday, February 3rd for a league matchup against the Clearwater Indians. The 7th grade A team grabbed their first win of the season with a 35-27 rout over the Indians. The 7th B team fell 13-23. The 8th grade A team continued their dominant presence on the court with a 60-24 win to remain undefeated on the season. The 8th grade B team fell to the Indians 19-26.

"We came out slow in the first half of the 7th grade A-game. Our guards had a handful of unforced turnovers and we missed several uncontested shots around the rim. We found our shot in the second half outscoring Clearwater 27-18." said Coach Hansen.

"We have spent a lot of time focusing on handling pressure and being strong with the basketball. Our guards did a much better job of owning their space and keeping their eyes up. Our ability to break the press allowed Dylan Mow several open shots around the rim. Mow finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds." said Coach Hansen.

"Fisher Dye brought great energy and physical presence at the top of our 1-3-1 zone. Our pressure on the defensive side of the ball forced Clearwater into quick shots. We did a great job of rebounding and eliminating second-chance points. Dye finished the game with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals." said Coach Hansen.

Dylan Mow had a great game leading the Cats with 15 points. Brady Nelson dropped in 6 points. Cooper Slayton, Alex Dillon, and Aiden Heckathorn all finished with 2 points each.

"Our 7th grade B team wasn’t clicking against Clearwater. We played soft on defense and couldn’t execute our sets correctly on offense. We couldn’t make shots and struggled to rebound on both sides of the floor. Our bigs normally have the height advantage in the B game, but we struggled to get the ball to them in their spots." said Coach Hansen

"Braylon Ross led the team in scoring with 5 points. Chance Koester played a good game offensively but couldn’t get his shots to fall. Kaden Palmer led the team in rebounds (4). Joe Bull led the B team in steals (5)." said Coach Hansen. Alex Dillon dropped in 4 points and Cameron Hagerman and Cooper Johns both finished with 2 points.

In the 8th grade A-game, "the tempo was ours tonight. Garrett Olson, Gavin Wayman and Kaiden Abasolo were rebounding machines and owned the paint all game. We did a great job of getting boards and then pushing the ball to our end of the floor." said Coach Hargrove.

Clearwater had a hard time stopping Kaiden Abasolo who controlled the game with 20 points, Garrett Olson had 16 points in the paint, Aiden McKee did a great job of scoring inside and out with 10 and Gavin Wayman had 9. "We did a good job of pushing the ball when Clearwater gave us the opportunity to. The guys had fun out there and they really worked well together," said Coach Hargrove.

"In the B game, we had a hard time breaking Clearwaters 2-2-1 trapping press. To sum up the game their press made us turn the ball over too many times and if we did break the press we would go to our offensive end and try to force the ball to our post to many times causing turnovers," said Coach Hargrove. "We really struggled to get the ball to our end of the court all game. We won on the rebounds count 20 to 16 and Josh Lien had another good night with 10 points and 10 boards. Kaden Richecky did well in the paint again with 6 boards." said Coach Hargrove.
