MHS - Men's Basketball / January 24, 2020 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Middle School boys basketball hosted the Prairie Hills Crusaders on Thursday, January 23rd for the second games of the season and the opening games of Patriot League West. The 8th-grade boys split with the Crusaders as the A team won an exciting game 48-35 and the B team lost a close one 14-19. The 7th-grade boys were swept by the Crusaders as the A team lost 20-41 and the B team lost 32-42.

"In the 8th grade A-game, we started out on an 11 to 0 run and were owning the tempo right off the tip. Garrett Olson had a great night with 16 points, 17 boards, and 4 steals. Shannon Fuller had another good night with 12 points and did a good job of slowing down their better players." said Coach Hargrove.

"Canon Lampe came into the game and dropped a deep 3 to get our tempo sparked back up when things on our end were starting to slow down. When Canon is open and has confidence he is a deadly shooter and we know to get him the ball." said Coach Hargrove. Gavin Wayman finished with 9 points, Kaiden Abasolo with 5 points, and Aiden McKee with 3 points.

"In the B game, Josh Lien had a good night on D and the boards. Gavin Clinesmith and Kaiden Richecky had 4 steals each. We were forcing passes all night which turned into turnovers. We lost the rebound count also it was 20 to 26 Prairie Hills. Plain and simple we couldn't get the ball to go in, 2 pointers we were 5 for 40, 3 pointers we were 0 for 8 and free throws 4 of 8. We did a great job getting to the rim but we have to finish." said Coach Hargrove.

Gavin Clinesmith lead the Wildcats with 6 points and Tucker Hargrove, Josh Lien, and Kayden Richecky all finished with 2 points each, and Jet Jorns and Garrett Booe both finished with 1 point each.

In the 7A game, "Prairie Hills came out hot in the first quarter taking an early 10 point lead. We had chances to score on offense, but we were unable to knock down shots. As a team, we shot 8/48 (17%). The boys played tough, but we allowed their defensive pressure to speed up our pace on offense. We also struggled to get back on defense and gave up too many points in transition" said Coach Hansen

Fisher Dye led the team with 10 points. Aiden Heckathorn gave us great energy off the bench and led the team in rebounds (9). Cooper Slayton led the team in steals (5). Brady Nelson did a better job looking for his shot and reduced his turnovers." said Coach Hansen.

Aiden Heckathorn and Dylan Mow both finished with 4 points each and Brady Nelson finished with 2 points.

"Our B team jumped out to an early 10 point lead in the first half. Our defense did not allow any points in the first quarter. We relaxed in the second quarter and allowed them to cut our lead to 3 points going into halftime. Momentum shifted in the 3rd quarter when the guards from Prairie Hills started hitting outside shots. We were outscored 28-15 in the second half" said Coach Hansen.

Aiden Heckathorn lead the Wildcats with 12 points and Kaden Palmer and Gaelin Mason-Schmidt both finished with 5 points, Braylon Ross and Cameron Hagerman both finished with 4 points, and Trey Florio finished with 2 points.

"This group listens and is eager to learn. They love to compete and battle when things get tough. Coach Metz and I are excited to work with this group. They are getting better every day and we are optimistic about what we have seen in the first two games" said Coach Hansen.
