Daniel Myears takes over the head coaching duties for Mulvane Football

MHS - Football / August 19, 2018 By Kasey McDowell

For the past 26 seasons in Mulvane, the Friday night events in the fall started off with some tailgating and then heading in to Lyle Couch stadium to watch Coach Fennewald lead the Wildcats into battle on the football field. This fall will be much of the same, but now the players will be following Coach Daniel Myears out on to the gridiron for 48 minutes of football. The past spring, Coach Fennewald announced his retirement from coaching to pursue an administrative position in Mulvane. He is now the Assistant Principal at Mulvane High School.

Coach Myears will be entering season 16 as a Wildcat Football coach and will be taking over the head coaching position for the 2018 season. He will also be the offensive coordinator as well as the QB/RB coach. Coach Myears is a 1993 graduate of Mulvane High School and a graduate of Wichita State University (1998). Coach Myears also served Mulvane Football as a middle school coach in 2001 and 2002. Coach Myear's offensive experience began at Friends University where he was an offensive assistant from 1998-2000. He is a weight lifting and co-ed PE teacher at Mulvane High School. Coach Myears is also the Head Girls Basketball Coach for the 2018-19 season.

When asked what he has learned from coaching under Fennewald for 14 years: "Dave was a great mentor to have as I worked for him. He was always working hard to prepare our kids to give them the best possible chance to win on Friday and Monday nights. He was extremely diligent with his film work and always was looking for any tips or keys that might give us the upper hand. I hope as I take over the program I can mirror his work ethic and leadership for the student athletes we have here at MHS."

What are your goals for this coming season? "Our goals will always remain the same as we move forward. Win Division IV and to beat Rose Hill and Wellington. We used to have qualify for the playoff as one of our goals but now that the state has changed the format every team makes the playoffs. Our goal as coaches is to continue what Coach Fennewald did in his years with the football program and even go beyond. We want to be positive influences on all of our players and build long lasting relationships with them. On the football field we want to continue to make Mulvane football a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs."

Mulvane will kick off the season this Friday with the annual Green & White Scrimmage at Lyle Couch stadium and then will face Andale at home on August 31st at 7:00 PM.
