The Wildcats swept districts 3-0 for back to back district titles

MHS - Football / November 1, 2017 By Kasey McDowell

The Mulvane Football team battled through injuries and ended the regular season with a 6-3 record and finished district play at 3-0 to clinch back to back district championships. The Cats have a tough battle ahead on Friday against Andover Central in the opening Regional game of state playoffs, but the coaches have been game planning for 2 weeks now. "We have a tough opponent but in playoffs they should all be tough. We need an excellent game from our defense putting on pressure and locking down receivers on defense and on offense we have to have a great game up front with O Line and be balanced to keep them off balanced. Ball security will be at a premium and we have to take advantage of scoring opportunities in red zone and force some turnovers." said Coach Fennewald.

When asked about this season and winning districts, Coach Fennewald said "Extremely elated for this group, after losing as many quality starting kids as we did from last year I felt we had a mountain in front of us thus "Move the mountain" could not as a coaching staff be any more proud of a group of men. We told the kids at the beginning of the season, names have changed but expectations are the same and one of our goals was to win districts. Thought they did it in style rushing for nearly 1,000 yards in just the district games and defensively being stingy when it counted."

As the regular season has been completed, Drew Ellis leads the Wildcat receivers with 33 grabs for 695 yards and 9 touchdowns. Jayden Price (JP3) leads the team rushing with 116 rushes for 885 yards and 16 touchdowns. Cole Diffenbaugh joins JP3 for a dual rushing attack and has 120 rushes for 718 yards and 7 touchdowns.  JP3 crossed the 1000 yard mark in passing this past Friday and has 60 completions for 1063 yards and 13 touchdown passes.

On the defensive side, Isaac Comer leads the cats with 77 tackles (solo + assists) followed by Kole Long with 75 tackles. Kole has also been causing havoc for opponents in the backfield and has accumulated 8.0 sacks and 14 tackles for loss of 80 yards. Brett Nelson leads the team in solo tackles with 35 and has 73 total tackles.

School Records:
On mulvanesports.com, we differentiate records for regular season games (9 games) and all games (including post season). The reason for this is because prior to 1969, Kansas did not have a state playoff system. State titles before 1938 were claimed as champs by a school or by a newspaper which more often than not named a school from the papers circulation area. These are not official state titles. The Topeka Daily Capitol started a ranking poll in 1938, these are not official state titles.

Starting in 1946, the Associated Press had a ranking poll for Class AA State Champion. To many, these are official state titles. Starting in 1969, the KSHSAA started the state championship playoffs for football (and the 3-game District play in 1981). These are official state titles.

Prior to the playoff system, there was not a clear state champion because there were different polls from different areas. For example, in 1963 Mulvane (9-0) was ranked #1 in state for All Classes in one poll and Lawrence (8-0) was also ranked #1 in All Classes in another poll.

Jayden Price has been making some marks on the school record board this season. He broke the career rushing TD records held by Huldon Tharp (2005-08) with 48 touchdowns in regular season games and 50 touchdowns in all games. Huldon's records were 38 and 43 respectively.

JP3 also broke the career rushing attempts record in regular season games with 439 attempts. The old record was also held by Tharp with 389 attempts. Price is 8 attempts away from breaking Huldon's all games attempts record of 482.

Price also broke Huldon's career points scored records (230 and 260) as he currently has 294 points scored in regular season games and 306 points in all games.

Jayden also topped Michael Mason's (2011-13) career rushing yards record of 3273 yards for all games. Jayden currently has 3308 rushing yards in all games. Price missed Brad Butts (1975-77) career rushing yards record (3200) in regular season games by 39 yards and finished his career with 3161 yards in regular season games.

Had Price not missed a couple of games due to injury, he most likely would have started tapping into Ty Redingtons passing records as well.
