STARTING PITCHING SHINES AS SKYHAWKS SPLIT HOME DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST IPFW

MARTIN, Tenn. – Both University of Tennessee at Martin starting hurlers pitched into the ninth inning today as the Skyhawk’s earned a split in their home doubleheader against the IPFW Mastodons at Skyhawk Field. UT Martin won the first game by a 3-2 margin in 11 innings before falling 4-2 in the nightcap.

Alex Evans carried a shutout into the ninth inning in Game 1 before ultimately parting ways with a no-decision. Patrick Bernard earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing two perfect frames. In the second game, Dom Bazzani fanned eight batters over 8.2 innings but was charged with the loss. Hayden Bailey (0.2 innings) and Shane Seckinger (0.1 innings) also made relief appearances and did not concede an earned run today for UT Martin (3-8).

Offensively, Daniel Kerwin accounted for a pair of doubles and two RBI’s for the Skyhawk’s while Matt Hirsch hit .429 (3-for-7) with two runs scored.

Game 1

The Skyhawk’s forced extra innings with a two-run ninth inning before claiming the walk off victory.

Evans was in a zone early, as he carried a no-hitter through four innings. He retired the side in order on 11 pitches in the first inning before pitching around a pair of walks in the second. He then sat the Mastodons down in order in the next two frames before allowing a leadoff single in the top of the fifth. Six pitches later, Evans was out of the inning after a strikeout and a 1-6-3 double play.

Evans then retired the side in order in the sixth and escaped trouble in the seventh after he stranded a Mastodon runner in scoring position. He followed with a pair of strikeouts and two more stranded IPFW baserunners in the top of the eighth.

UT Martin loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but could not push across a run as the game remained scoreless. The Mastodons scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth but the Skyhawk’s rallied in the bottom half of the inning.

Ryan Helgren pinch-hit to lead off the ninth and drew a walk to ignite the comeback. Fletcher Johnson was called upon to pinch run and he would soon advance to second base on a Hirsch single. Mike Murphy executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Kerwin, who answered with a big double down the left field line to even the score at 2-all.

Bernard’s day began in the top of the 10th, as he fanned a pair of batters to keep the game tied. He followed that with an 11-pitch frame to set up the Skyhawk offense for the game-winning run.

Hirsch hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the 11th and moved to second base after another Murphy sacrifice bunt combined with a Mastodon error. Kerwin then laid down a sacrifice bunt on a fielder’s choice before Hirsch scampered home on an errant wild pitch to cap off the comeback.
