Commerce Bank and Pittsburg State University put on a banquet Thursday morning for the 2015 PSU Outstanding Student-Athlete Recognition at the Memorial Auditorium, honoring 22 of the top Gorilla athletes for their work inside the classroom during the academic year.

“PSU has 104 All-Time Academic All-Americans, including 99 selections since joining the NCAA Division II in 1989.” Pitt State President Dr. Steve Scott said. “That’s the highest total of all division II schools in that time…Over 200 of Pitt State’s approximately 350 student-athletes carry a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher. Nearly 60 percent of the overall group.”

Of the 22 student-athletes honored at the ceremony, the Pitt State football program led the way with five honorees. Gorilla baseball, softball and volleyball each has three representatives. Women’s basketball and men’s track and field had a pair of honorees. Women’s track and field had three representatives, two of which also participated in cross country. PSU men’s basketball was also represented.

“On behalf of all of our student-athletes, I would like to say thank you to our community, to our coaches, to our families and our teachers and especially to Commerce Bank for supporting us on our journeys here at Pitt State,” Hailey Roderique said. “Thank you for allowing us to pursue our dreams in our academics and athletics. Thank you for everything.”
